How does HabiJax build homes?
HabiJax works with volunteers to build affordable housing with God's people in need.

Where do the mortgage payments that HabiJax homeowners make go?
Homeowners make monthly mortgage payments, which are recycled to help build more HabiJax homes.

What is included in a homeowner's monthly mortgage payments?
Property taxes and homeowners' insurance are all paid out of the monthly mortgage payments.

How do homeowners complete their sweat equity hours?
Approved homeowners partner with HabiJax in the construction of other HabiJax homes as well as their own homes.

Is there a down payment on HabiJax homes?
There is a required monetary down payment of $500 after the homeowner has been approved.

How many sweat equity hours are required?
There is a minimum requirement of 300 sweat equity hours.

I've heard that homeowners never actually own their homes; they rent them. Is this true?
HabiJax is a homeownership program and not a rental program. Homeowners are expected to plan for new responsibilities, such as unexpected repairs and regular home maintenance and improvements.

How many homes has HabiJax built since 1988?
HabiJax has built over 1,400 homes in different neighborhoods throughout Jacksonville.

What are some of the requirementsof a HabiJax homeowner?
  • Homeowners sign a Repurchase Agreement with HabiJax detailing the guidelines for payment if they want to sell the house before paying off their mortgage.
  • HabiJax has the first right of refusal to repurchase the home.
  • HabiJax homeowners must demonstrate a commitment to a drug and violence free environment.


I've heard that if a homeowner dies, HabiJax will take back the home. Is this true?
Upon the death of a homeowner, the deed is transferred to the rightful heirs who may continue to make mortgage payments, if the mortgage has not been paid off.
