Building on a Dream

Nearly half a century has passed since Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. became the most prominent name in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. Ultimately, Dr. King gave his life for his views. Today, Dr. King's dream continues to challenge and rally caring people throughout the world.

Habitat for Humanity International also has a dream. In 1976, the organization was created as a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. Since its founding, Habitat for Humanity has built more than 300,000 houses in more than 3,000 communities. It is a good start, but a long way from fulfilling Habitats ultimate goal: to eliminate substandard housing from the face of the earth.

Building on the Dream embraces and celebrates cultural diversity and religious solidarity, which Dr. King referred to as the beloved community. The beloved community includes everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, creed or religion. We must work passionately and resolutely to bridge the racial divide and the socio-economic gap that is prevalent in our world.

Each HabiJax house built through this program will stand as a tribute to the dream of Dr. King and will also demonstrate what can be accomplished through love, unity of purpose and faith in action.

If your organization is interested in partnering with HabiJax to honor the legacy of Dr. King, please contact Linda Crofton at (904) 208-6650.
