Building on Faith

Building on Faith mission projects create a unique partnership between HabiJax and the faith community. Together we build houses as an expression of God’s love so that families and individuals, who meet qualifying criteria, can afford to purchase a new high- quality interest-free home (Exodus 22:25).

Traditionally, Building on Faith commences in September around the National Day of Prayer. However, Building on Faith events can be organized for any time during the year. This is an exciting hands-on faith-in-action opportunity which impacts lives for generations to come.
God has enabled these mission opportunities to bring together an ecumenical group of faith coalitions as we work side-by-side to put into effect “The Theology of the Hammer.” Since 1988, approximately 20 percent of our HabiJax homes have been built in partnership with faith groups.

Faith-based sponsorships can be large or small in scale and we have professional staff and volunteers who will guide and work alongside your church volunteers throughout every construction phase. Feel free to either partner with us independently or join one of our existing church coalitions or even start a new coalition of your own. We have plenty of experience and resources to make this a wonderfully exciting experience for members of your congregation regardless of their experience—there is something for everyone!
Though we build on faith every day at HabiJax, Building on Faith mission projects have become an important way for our staff and board to participate alongside the religious community in collectively putting our faith-in-action.

The Theology of the Hammer

The “theology of the hammer,” teaches us to put aside our differences and to work in partnership with one another. Habitat for Humanity explains it this way:

This theology is about bringing a wide diversity of people, churches, and other organizations together to build houses and establish viable and dynamic communities. It is acknowledging that differences of opinion exist on numerous subjects—political, philosophical, and theological—but that we can find common ground in using a hammer as an instrument to manifest God’s love. Even though there may be strong differences on all sorts of things—baptism, communion, what night to have prayer meeting, and how the preacher should dress, for example—we can agree on the imperative of the gospel to serve others in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

As we focus on working together to build a house, we realize that the things that make us the same become more important than the things that keep us apart. Putting the theology of the hammer into practice will help us eliminate poverty housing and will also glorify God.
