During our 30 years of building communities together with our partners, we have improved the city with high-quality, affordable homes and enhanced neighborhoods, providing a better quality of life for homeowners and their children in the Urban Core of Jacksonville.
The neighborhoods that surround downtown were the main focus for HabiJax’s homeownership program for over 25 years, until the organization made a decision to focus its efforts on one Urban Core neighborhood.
To make a greater impact on the revitalization of Jacksonville neighborhoods, HabiJax committed to the enhancement of the New Town area of Jacksonville and is a partner in the New Town Success Zone. In 2011, HabiJax committed to a $16,000,000 capital campaign toward the revitalization of New Town with affordable homeownership opportunities and housing repair services to non-Habitat homeowners in the neighborhood. To date, HabiJax has provided over 300 families with housing through homeownership and completed over 190 repair projects.
HabiJax, along with the other partners in the Success Zone, celebrated these achievements, but there was still a missing piece where New Town was struggling: Economic Development. New Town is bounded by two corridors: Kings Road, which is heavily commercial, and West Beaver Street, a largely industrial area. There was an opportunity for development, but no plan in place to revitalize these corridors, although there was always the understanding that economic opportunity for current and future residents was imperative to the success and sustainability of New Town.
HabiJax continues to work closely with the local residents, business owners, and LISC Jacksonville to develop and implement a plan for economic growth and job opportunities in the neighborhood. In 2016, HabiJax was nominated for a LISC Jacksonville Community Development EPIC Award for our work in New Town.
